Instructional Nature Trails

Mining instructional nature trail | top |

Establishing Authority: Mining-Geological Foundation
Length: 14 km circuit
Number of Stations: 12
Accessibility:
The instructional nature trail forms a circle beginning and ending at the square in Zlaté Hory (train and bus connection) at the Town Museum. It begins in conjunction with the blue hiking trail around the bus station toward Příčná hill. The difference in altitude between the lowest and highest points of the trail is 545 m. The circuit takes 6 hours to complete. The trail is marked by markers indicating an instructional nature trail.

The instructional nature trail goes through the adjoining hills around Zlaté Hory (Gold Mountains). In the local woods and streams we find many stone hills, alluvial deposits, placer mounds with washed out minerals, mining pools, and collapsed hollows which are the result of underground mining. In the hills above Zlaté Hory there are mine shafts and tunnels in which deep mining took place. The instructional nature trail goes mainly through wooded terrain.
A good part of it goes through mining areas where there exists the danger of falling into underground passages. Thus in the interests of safety, do not venture off the marked trails and do not enter collapsed or open mining areas.

Rejvíz | top |

Establishing Authority: Jeseníky Protected Natural Landscape Area Management
Length: 3 km
Number of Stations: 5
Accessibility:
The trail can be accessed via the bus from Jeseník to Rejvíz. The trail begins at the Penzion Rejvíz and continues along the yellow hiking path in the direction of Bublavý stream. At station no. 3, there is a terrain station for overseeing nature with a cash box. Here they collect a symbolic contribution to the maintenance of the trails. This service also provides further information on the locale. The trail continues along a split log way to the Velké mechové jezírko (Large Peat Bog) with an area of 1693 m2 and maximum depth of 3 m. The path is marked by markers indicating an instructional nature trail. It is accessible in the summer season from May through October.

RejvízThe Rejvíz instructional nature trail is found within the national nature reserve of the same name, located in the northeast part of the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains area. In this reserve you will find peat bogs (the largest in Moravia) of the heights bog type. They originated in the post-Ice Age era, six to seven thousand years ago. The entire area is in a shallow basin, such that water from surrounding slopes flows into it, where it is caught and does not escape. The fir woods – a strong influence on the wet nature of the area – gradually die and their remains, which create a protected area around the individual peat bogs, gradually yield to the open growth of blueberry mud lands into which are a sprinkling of birch, alders and mountain ash. The mud lands reach a depth of 6-15 metres. Because they do not grow rapidly, the oldest go back more than 150 years.
One can encounter flora such as the carnivorous red-leaved sundown, the small cranberry, blueberries, and the Labrador Tea. Of the lower fauna here there are some rare examples of artic species – for example dragonflies, the Moorland Clouded Yellow butterfly and the ant Formica picea. Of the amphibians, we should at least mention the Moor Frog.

Pasák | top |

Establishing Authority: Jeseníky Protected Natural Landscape Area Management and the Branná Town Office
Length: 12.5 km circuit
Number of Stations: 14
Accessibility:
The instructional nature trail begins in Branná below the railway station (bus and train) and forms a circle. It is intended only for walking. It is not recommended for cycling, on several portions of the trail there are rocky outcrops. The trail is marked by indicators stating it is an instructional nature trail and often it follows portions of the green and yellow marked hiking paths.

BrannáFrom Branná the trail rises through the woods onto the ridge of the Jeseníky Mts, where in the group of peaks the Pasák cliffs are located. These are cliffs which have an interesting formation, due to erosion. They form a 250 m long and up to 30 m high cliff wall. Pasák is famous for its geological and geomorphological formation – a rocky hump with frost cliffs, rocky overhangs, terraced and self-standing rocky peaks – one of which has given the name to the natural monument and to stories about a shepherd (pasák) who turned to stone. One of the attractions is a 2 m wide natural hole through the rocks. From the peak Pasák there is a wide scenic vista over the whole Jeseníky Mts. Ridge, all the way to the Králický Sněžník peak.

Červenohorské sedlo – Šerák – Ramzová | top |

Establishing Authority: Jeseníky Protected Natural Landscape Area Management
Length: 14.5 km
Number of Stations: 8
Accessibility:
Červenohorské sedlo (saddle – bus stop) or Ramzová (bus and train) and from there by funicular to Černava and Šerák. From Šerák it is possible to get to the town of Ramzová by foot or funicular. Mountainous terrain with great differences in elevation; a trail only for hiking on foot. Access is possible via the yellow hiking trail from Jeseník, the blue trail from Horní Lipová and the green trail from Kouty nad Desnou.

Červenohorské sedloThe path goes from the Červenohorské saddle over a newly reconstructed path in the direction of the Vřesová spring. The chalet at Vřesová studánka (Vřesová spring) was built for the needs of travelling pilgrims. Today in this area there is only a small stone chapel, which serves as a cover to the spring well which is no longer so plentiful. Opposite the Vřesová spring below Spálená mountain we can behold an interesting formation – a rock pool which was created by fluctuating temperatures and the decomposition of stone since the beginning of the Quaternary period. The trail continues through the national nature reserve Šerák - Keprník, the largest reserve in Moravia. It was founded in 1903 on the impetus of botanists. In the Trojmezí area, there are places of developing bogs, peat bogs in escarpments and mountain ridges with flora typical to bogs. At the peak of Keprník (1423 m altitude) is a stone orientation indicator – a place of scenic vistas on the highest peaks of the Jeseníky Mts., the Rychlebský Mts. and the massif of Králický Sněžník. The other peak on the trail is Šerák (1351 m altitude) with a tourist lodge.

Králický Sněžník | top |

Establishing Authority: Forests of the Czech Republic, Hanušovice Forest Authority
Length: 14 km
Number of Stations: 15
Accessibility:
The trail begins in the town of Dolní Morava and goes along the yellow hiking path through the Morava River Valley all the way to its source below the peak of Králický Sněžník. It continues further along the red hiking trail to the crossroads above the Adélin spring, from there along the yellow path and ends at the Návrší tourist lodge. It is possible to traverse the trail from the opposite direction, starting at the Návrší tourist lodge past the source of the Morava River to the town of Dolní Morava. Only the final part of the trail actually lies in the Olomouc Region.

Kralický SněžníkThe symbol on the instructional nature trail is the silhouette of the baby elephant, the unofficial symbol of Králický Sněžník. A statue of the baby elephant has been located just under the peak since 1932. Through the pronounced valley flows the upper stream of the Morava River, enlarged by the Milky Spring of karst origin. Here you can find the Tvarožné díry caves, the Poniklec Stream ponor, Mramorové (Marble) caves, Patzelt cave and karst springs in the town of Dolní Morava. The Králický Sněžník massif is made up of composite gneiss, orthgneiss and paragneiss. It created the characteristic amphitheatre of springs of the Morava River, frost cliffs, stone pool, and other periglacial appearances. Detritus fields and alpine meadows have been preserved only sporadically, mainly in the mountain ridges.

Bílá Voda – Hraničky Instructional Nature Trail | top |

Length: 37 km
Number of Stations: 8
Access: The instructional nature trail runs along cycling path no. 6044

The instructional nature trail goes along cycling path no. 6044 from the village of Bílá Voda to Hraničky. The route goes through a number of interesting localities, including geologic and geo-morphologic ones. Right at the beginning of the path, in the village of Bílá Voda, there are several interesting places, including the former chateau park, founded in the second half of the 18th century. This once vast plantation has been much reduced and only a small portion remains today (current rare woods include for example a giant arbor vitae, 22 metres high, or a yew more than 300 years old, a nationally protected tree.
Another place of interest is the Kukačka former limestone quarry. In a fairly small area it contains a number of plant types, including some rare and endangered (Gentiana cruciata, Gentianopsis ciliata, Carline Thistle, and many more.)
The cycling path goes on around the protected natural formation Šafářova Rock; above the path are the Kraví cliffs. Both formations are frequented by mountain climbers.
In Javorník, the tiny park inside the Czech Forests building is worth a look, with its valuable foreign woods, e.g. a Kentucky Coffee Tree, a Common Catalpa, a London Plane Tree.
Another station is Račí Valley with a length of ca. 7 km, quite valuable from the biological point of view. In 1998, a nature reservation was proclaimed in the lower part of the valley. The protected area includes land on both sides of the Račí Stream, including the localities of Čertovy Kazatelny (Devil’s Pulpits) and Pustý Zámek (Abandoned Chateau). There are many valuable plants and animals found here (the Black Stork, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, etc.).

From Račí Údolí the trail goes to Uhelná, where the most biologically interesting locality in the immediate area is the former lignite quarry of Pelnář. Many types of fish are found here, as well as amphibians, insects and birds.
The last station of the instructional nature trail is Hraničky. In the year 1921, it had 192 inhabitants, living in 41 houses. Today there is only one building standing, not constantly inhabited. Typical for this area is variegated meadow vegetation and here we can find interesting plants and protected animals, for example the tiny whinchat bird and the mysterious corncrake.
