Border fortifications
near Staré Město pod Sněžníkem
These Czechoslovak border defence fortifications built over
the years 1937 – 1938 against the aggression of fascist
Germany, ranked at the time amongst the most efficient fortification
systems in Europe. The characteristic type of light fortifications
is the so-called ‘řopík’, built in connected lines and in
two of them actually in three sequences. The

construction
of heavy fortifications was begun in the direction of the
greatest threat, and also near Staré Město which form a
row of independent infantry cabins, huge steel-concrete
structures with extensive underground spaces. Only six of
the planned sixteen cabins were successfully completed.
One should not pass up the opportunity to take a tour of
the individual fortification buildings.
